Mindfulness, sati, is not present in every state of mind, but instead needs to be brought into being (Anālayo 2013: 181). From the viewpoint of early Buddhist thought, mindfulness cannot be considered a constantly present property of the mind that just needs to be recognized.
You must learn to live in the present moment and how to focus your attention on only the matters you choose to focus on. Mindfulness is, however, a specialty of Buddhism. In either case, mindfulness is about cultivating, as the Buddhist teacher Joseph Goldstein has written, “the quality and power of mind that is aware of what is happening, without judgement and without interference.”. Mindfulness is about existing in the present and letting go of judgments, fears, regrets and expectations. That does not, however, mean that you should be stoic or without emotion. Instead, embrace your emotions, but allow them to pass like the weather.
